Hibernian Inn Senior Hurling Championship Group 2 Round 1 Fast start key to Nenagh win Nenagh Eire Og opened their Hibernian Inn sponsored North Senior Hurling Championship Group 2 campaign with a ninepoint victory over Moneygall in Cloughjordan on Saturday evening. Nenagh Eire Og should have had this game wrapped up by half-time but instead of taking points after their whirlwind start which saw them accumulate a seven point lead, they allowed Moneygall to gain a foothold and had to rely on two late goals to run out flattering winners. Straight from the thrown-in Nenagh won a free that was dispatched between the posts by Kevin Tucker. A shellshocked Moneygall were put on the back foot as Nenagh followed that start with Kevin Tucker scoring from play then Michael Heffernan was quickest to react to a loose pass to take his point before Cliff Moloney scored from an acute angle. Nenagh opened up a seven point lead after 6 min utes when a penetrating run by Paddy Murphy released Tommy Heffernan who rattled the back of the Moneygall. Seven minutes had elapsed before Moneygall registered their first score with a free from the halfway line by Paddy Fanning but Richie Flannery showed that he could do likewise with a free from his own half to regain Nenaghs seven point lead. Nenaghs goalie Michael McNamara came to his sides rescue pushing Tom Toohey effort out for a 65 that was returned with interest by Mick Ryan for Moneygalls second point. With those scores Moneygall continued to press with Paddy Fanning from a long range effort followed by a free from his own half by Mike Ryan reduced the lead to four points. Nenagh who added a point from Paddy Murphy as the end of the opening quarter, regained the upper hand but blew the chance to open up a commanding lead going for goal rather than taking points from the chances that came their way. Instead it allowed Moneygall who were living off scraps managed to stay in touch with points from Paddy Fanning and Stephen Maher (who had replaced the injured Tadhg Kennedy) respectively. With just two points between the sides going into the last five minutes of the opening half Nenagh regained their composure that saw them add a further three consecutive points. Firstly Michael Heffernan scored an excellent point from out on the touchline but it was surpassed Noel Maloney well executed a sideline cut a minute later before an inform Kevin Tucker added a point from an acute angle to give Nenagh a 1-9 to 0-7 lead at the halfway stage. Five minutes into the second half Nenagh extended their lead with another well taken point by Paddy Murphy and that was followed by yet another Kevin Tucker free that looked to have put this game beyond Moneygall. However, Moneygall refused to capitulate and kept in touch when Tommy Deveraux raised the green flag when he was the recipient of a pass from Ger Ryan whose tenacious tackle ended a Nenagh attack after 40 min utes. Nenagh responded with yet another Kevin Tucker free but Moneygall playing with more commitment and now aided by a strengthening breeze saw Tommy Deveraux score from an acute angle and Deveraux followed that by setting-up Paddy Fanning to reduce the leeway to three points. But Nenagh hit back in the best way possible with a long range point from Eddie Tucker followed by a goal made possible by substitute John Slattery who cut through the Moneygall rearguard before slipping the sliotar to the unmarked Cliff Maloney to score from close range. Although Moneygall hit back with a well taken point by Eoghan Ryan they were facing the proverbial mountain as a rampant Nenagh added another point through Kevin Tucker and a third goal when a long range free by Richie Flannery was collected by John Slattery who kept his cool and fired low into the net. Moneygall who added a point through Eoghan Ryan were giving too many frees away and an infringement by Mike Ryan was punished by Nenaghs set-piece taker Kevin Tucker to leave Nenagh leading by 3-15 to 1-11 going into the last five minutes. Moneygall raised the green flag for a second time when Stephen Maher scrambled the sliotar home in a crowded goalmouth in the dying minutes, but it was just a consolation score as man of the match Kevin Tucker with the last puck of the game scored from a free to give Nenagh a comfortable nine point victory. Denis Quirke Meats Intermediate Hurling Championship Returning OMahony aids Newport success Tipperarys All Star centre back Conor OMahony made a return to action on Sunday evening to help Newport come through a potentially tricky assignment against last years county junior champions, Moneygall. Played in incessant rain throughout, Newport had to dig deep in the second half with just 14 men following the dismissal of wing back Darren Moore for a second bookable offence. Last years defeated North and county intermediate finalists got off to a bright start with points from Kieran Doheny and Eoin Shinners. Good link up play from Newports midfield and forwards tormented the Moneygall defence with both Eoin Shinners and Kieran Doheny finding the net inside twenty minutes. A break in play for an injury to Donal Doughan seemed to revive Moneygall. They went on the attack and were rewarded with points from Damien Martin and Barry Ryan to keep them in touch. They were aided further after 25 minutes when Newports Darren Moore was sent off for a second yellow card offence. The resulting free was dropped in around the goalmouth and Joe Smyth netted for the Moneygall side. Tom Moylan kept Newport on top for the remainder of the half with clearances and sideline cuts deep into the opposing territory. Being reduced to 14 men, Newport needed to restructure at half time and called on county star Conor OMahony to step into the fray at centre back for the second period. Three minutes after the restart, Moneygall were first on the score sheet after a long range shot from Michael Cahill flew past the defence and goalkeeper Michael Flannery failed to deal and it was helped over the line by Joe Smyth. This bought Moneygall within two points of Newport. Moneygall stayed on the attack with efforts from Damien Martin, Conor Troy and Jody Troy but the Newport defence stepped up to the challenge and kept them at bay. Newport failed to capitalise and stretch their lead on Moneygall's indiscipline as Conor OMahony and Eoin Shinners could not find range with frees. Newports first score came after ten minutes of the second half, some clever play by Newports Andrew Hickey set up Kieran Doheny for his fourth point of the game. Clearances by Martin Deane and Barry Ryan set up attacks for Moneygall but they were not rewarded. In the latter part of the second half Newport began to get on top again and finished off the game with fine points from Eoin Shinners and Tom Moylan. Last ditch efforts from frees for Moneygall could not catch Newport as they had five points to spare over Moneygall in the end. Man of the Match: Kieran Doheny (Newport) Scorers: Newport: Kieran Doheny 1-4; Eoin Shinners 1-4, 0-3 frees; Peter OSullivan, Tom Moylan 0-1 each. Juniors Capture County Hurling title
Moneygall 1-11 Emly 1-10 Sunday November 2nd 2008 proved to be a historic day for Moneygall GAA club when the clubs Junior hurlers captured the county Junior A title for the first time since 1949 by defeating Emly in Newport. Played in ideal conditions the game was close and hard fought through out. Emly started the better of the two teams but Moneygall fought their way into the game and ended the first half only a point down, 0-06 to 0-05. On the resumption Emly again took the game to Moneygall and the pressure eventually told when Emly were awarded a penalty. The penalty was sent to the net by Emly's top scorer Pat Buckley and Moneygall now trailed by 5 points. Moneyall made some vital changes at this stage, most notably the introduction of veteran Eamon Troy. The changes paid dividend when Jody Troy popped up on the edge of the square and batted the ball to the net. The game was now there for the taking and Moneygall took the initiative and drew level with a pointed free from Donal Doughan. Deep into injury time Eamon Troy scored a great point to put Moneygall ahead but there was still time for more. Emly levelled with a super point from under the stand courtesy of Pat Buckley. A draw would have been a fair result at this stage but Moneygall won a free around 40 yards out, and it was left to Donal Doughan to point the winning score. Following the final whistle Moneygall captain's Enda Glesson and Billy McCormack were presented with the Junior cup for 2008. Moneygall now move up to the Intermediate ranks for 2009. Great credit is due to the panel for the effort put in during the year, and also to the management team of Paddy Whyte, Diarmuid "The Bull" Kennedy and Willie Jones. Spike Nolan R.I.P. - Graveside Oration by Philip Ryan "Spike" We have come here today to pay our final respects to a true friend and a very special person. Like each one of you, I have been thinking a lot about Spike over the past few days. In fact we have been thinking about him a lot now over several weeks and months. This is not surprising. Spike had a special and rare quality that we find only very occasionally, and in very special people - he made each of us feel in some way that he was part of our own family, and each of us felt in a very real sense that Spike belonged to us. We all have our own special memories, personal experiences and humorous anecdotes about Spike. He has rubbed shoulders with many eminent people, any one of whom would speak eloquently in tribute to him. I feel deeply honoured, very privileged and very humbled to be speaking here on behalf of us all, and on our behalf to pay tribute to a great man - a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, son - a great colleague and team mate - a great friend. Many tributes have been paid to Spike in recent days, and many more will be paid in the days to come. Our President, Nickey Brennan, in paying his own tribute, has described Spike as 'one of the GAA's greatest servants and a cornerstone of the Association in Tipperary for decades'. He said that 'Spike was the manifestation of selfless commitment, of service to his Community, Club and County, and of dedication to the ethos and ideals of the GAA'. In those few short words, he has captured the man. Of course Spike was first and foremost a dedicated family man. In his young days he was devoted to his parents and his family in Moneygall, and he has brought these same values to his own family, to whom he was so dedicated and of whom he was so proud. There was never any bragging or boasting, that was not his way, but quiet comments made in passing told us about how lucky he was to have Margaret as his wife, how loving and supportive were his children, and how much they all meant to him. And there was the occasional reference to a particular achievement, about which he made no big deal but of which he was clearly very proud. We have all suffered a great loss, so how much greater must be the loss of his own family. We offer our deepest sympathy to Margaret, to his children Brd, Michael, Yvonne, Lorraine, Enda and Martin, to his brothers and sisters, Tom, Paddy, Teresa and Mary, to his grandchildren and to his extended family. We know ye will all miss him dearly. We can only hope and pray that the deep love he felt for you all will help to sustain you at this difficult time and in the times ahead, and that you will be able to take inspiration from his own noble example, and the manner in which he dealt with the great personal tragedies in his own life - the deaths of his parents at an early age and, more recently, the untimely death of his sister Ann. Spike also fought courageously during his life against a number of illnesses and, up to his most recent battle, he had always come out on top. His determination, his courage, his resilience and, ultimately, his resignation and acceptance of the will of God, have been an inspiration to us all. Outside of his family, hurling was Spike's great love. He was steeped in its traditions. His father, Tone Nolan, was the best hurley maker for miles around. His hurls had a very distinctive grip, and had the hallmarks of skill and craftsmanship that made them readily identifiable as a Nolan hurl. He had inherited that craft from his own father, Tom Nolan, Spike's grandfather, who made the hurls for the famous Greyhounds. I can recall, when we were small chaps, the pride on the faces of Spike and the Gunner when we were shown an old hurl of Wedger Meagher's, made by their grandfather. On his mother's side, two of Spike's granduncles, Darby and Major Collison, won senior All-Irelands with Tipperary. Darby, who played centrefield on the winning 1916 team, brought the first All-Ireland medal to North Tipp. These are just indications of the great traditions that Spike inherited, traditions he didn't brag about, but he drew on them all, and he enhanced them greatly throughout his life. He contributed a lifetime to Moneygall hurling, on and off the field, from his earliest days as a juvenile, through the underage ranks and, while still a minor, he played senior hurling and senior football for the Club. At senior level, he played for years through the heartbreak of countless defeats, travelling from far and wide around the country, at no expense to the Club, for regular training sessions and all our matches. When success eventually came, he played a leading role in bringing that elusive county title to Moneygall in 1975, and in holding onto it again the following year. He led by example. At his peak his deeds on the field were inspirational, and he didn't mind letting the rest of us know when some of us were coming up short of what was required. I can recall one particular day when his exploits in defence were not being matched further down the field, his booming voice came at us - 'would ye ever get off ye're arses and do something down there in the forwards'. Even at a range of over fifty yards, that was a motivating force. Spike was in many ways the barometer of our team, he had the confidence to wear his emotions openly and, through good days and bad, his face told the story of how the rest of us were feeling. While still a player, Spike also made a huge contribution to our Club off the field. He played a leading role in the development of our Club Centre, and he gave his time and his many skills generously and freely to the project. When his playing days were over he continued to be on call for all work in the Centre, he was an active member of the Club Committee, he became the Club's delegate to the North Board, and he took his first step on the Officer ladder when elected Registrar of the North Board in 1982. He brought all his skills and enthusiasm to his adopted Club Kildangan. He made a huge contribution at underage level in the 1980's, and he again played a leading role in the planning and development of their Club Centre in Puckane. He served the Kildangan Club in many capacities over the years, including a term as Club Chairman in the late nineties, and he was inducted into the Kildangan Hall of Fame in 2006. He was justly proud of Kildangan's great All-Ireland win in 2005, and of his son Enda's role in that victory. Thankfully and amazingly, less than 2 weeks ago he was able to attend the Kildangan / Moneygall game in Cloughjordan. I was at the other side of the field myself, and from what I hear he was not a passive spectator, but then he never was. Spike's contribution to his county, both as a player and administrator, has been well documented in recent days in tributes paid by Chairman, John Costigan, and several of his colleagues. He pulled on the Blue and Gold jersey in all grades of hurling and football, winning an All Ireland U21 medal in 1967, but Spike never went on about any of that. As Treasurer of the Board he has made a contribution to the County that can never be overstated, his skills in managing the finances being matched by his skills in dealing with people, big and small. What has really struck me in talking to his colleagues in recent days is the genuine affection in which he was held by all, not an experience usually enjoyed, or a situation easily achieved by the person in charge of the purse strings. The visit to his bedside after the recent League final by Liam Sheedy and the county players, and the guard of Honour they provided for him yesterday evening in Nenagh, speaks volumes about him, about them, about the relationship between them, and indeed about his relationship with people generally. For indeed, Spike's talents and Spike's contribution went far beyond hurling and sport. Is cuimhin liom m'athair r go minic gurb Spike an maclinn ab fhearr a bh aige riamh. B'fhidir nach raibh an 'book learning', mar a darf, ar fheabhas aige, ach nuair a chuir Spike a aigne d'aon rud n d'aon gn, nor stop s go dt go raibh an freagra aige, agus freagra practicil a bh ag teastil uaidh i gcna. Do bhronn Dia scilleanna speisialta ar Spike, do bhain s sid thar bharr astu, agus anois t s chun na scilleanna channa a bhronn arais agus iad madaithe faoi chad. Spike was architect, designer, builder, craftsman, a master of all the trades and, although he had no formal accountancy training, he established new levels of excellence for the role of Treasurer. He used his wide array of skills and talents so generously and for the benefit of us all. Even as a young man, whenever a job needed to be done, or there was a problem to be solved, he was the first port of call for many of the neighbours in and around Moneygall, and I am sure it hasn't been any different in Ballycommon. Where he got the time to look after us all, and achieve all the things he achieved in life, God himself only knows. We owe a big debt and heartfelt thanks to Margaret and her family for allowing Spike to be so generous to the rest of us in giving us his time and giving us himself in so many different ways. Like each one of you, I have many personal memories, but the memory what will stay with me forever is January of last year, when my own Dad died. Spike and Margaret had just gone to Lanzarotte for a well needed and well deserved break. Several people said that Spike would be devastated to be missing the funeral. Of course, he didn't miss the funeral. I remember saying to him at the time, that the depth of our respect and our friendship was not measured by the fact that himself and Margaret broke off their holiday and came home. It was measured by something far greater, the fact that, instinctively and subconsciously, we knew that he would not be able to stay away. And now that the time has come to say our farewell to Spike, it is fitting to say for him The Hurler's Prayer. Grant me, O Lord, a hurler's skill
Spike certainly hurled like a man, he played the game, and I have no doubt but that he is already making a big impact up above. I can picture him now, getting involved in everything up there and being as busy as ever. I can see him drawing up plans to improve the accommodation arrangements of his old team mates Billy Mac and Billy Fanning, and he is going to be even busier doing the same for the members of his own family and the friends who have gone before him; sorting out the finances, putting them on a sound footing and cracking down on any inefficiencies; giving the Great Manager Himself a few friendly words of advice about the disposition of his forces; and bringing all his skill and energy to bear on the resolution of arguments. And I can even picture him starting an argument or two of his own. But above all, I can see him bringing to his new kingdom that infectious combination of enthusiasm, dedication, emotion, wisdom, innocence, resilience, impatience, stubbornness, loyalty, kindness, friendship and love that all of us who are left behind are going to miss so much. Spike, ar dheis D go raibh do anam - anam mr, anam cinelta, anam flaithiulach, anam crga, anam dlis. |

Death of Tipperary County Board Treasurer Michael "Spike" Nolan It is with regret that we inform you of the death of Tipperary County Board Treasurer Michael Nolan who died after a long illness on Tuesday afternoon. Commonly known to one and all as Spike, he gave a lifetime of service to the GAA. As a player, Spikes career stretched over five decades beginning with a defeat in a National School final with Dunkerrin N.S. in 1959 and stretching through to 1991 when he came on a substitute to help his side to win the ESB All-Ireland Final. In between, Spike won Munster and All-Ireland Under 21 Hurling medals with Tipperary in 1967 and represented his county at all grades in both hurling and football. At club level, Spike helped his native Moneygall to win County Senior Hurling titles in 1975 and 1976. Spike became an accomplished referee when his playing days ended and he was chosen to referee the North Tipperary Senior Hurling Final of 1984 and the North Tipperary Senior Football Finals of 1985 and 1986. In recent times, Spike made his name as a very efficient administrator, serving as County Board Treasurer from 1988 to 1991 and from 2000 to current day. He also served as Treasurer of the North Tipperary Divisional Board from 1985 to 1988 and from 1991 to 2000. At club level, Spike was involved for many years with the Moneygall club, serving on the Development committee during the construction of their sports complex in the mid 1970s. Spike transferred to Kildangan in the early 1980s and threw himself energetically in to the clubs activities serving at numerous levels in the club including as Club Chairman from 1997 to 1999. In December 2007, Spike was honoured with a Special Merit Award by the Munster Council in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Moneygall GAA club would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to the Nolan family during this difficult time. May he rest in peace. (For more on "Spike" click here) |

Young guns inspire Kildangan fight back Coming into the game with a lot of questions to answer, Kildangan gave themselves a major confidence booster as they came from behind to win the championship opener on Saturday evening. Missing three of the forward line that has served them so well since their promotion to the senior ranks in 2005, Kildangan were on somewhat of a mission of self-discovery and they will be pleased with how the side performed in over-coming the disappointing challenge of Moneygall. The injection of youth into their attack had a positive effect with the Gleeson brothers, Eoin and Ruairi making scoring contributions with Karl Hogan?s relocation to centre forward also paying dividends while Darragh Egan also produced a confidence-boosting performance on the forty. County minor star Joe Gallagher is playing with confidence and it is showing in his play as he turned in a superb display at midfield. Defensively, Kildangan had their problems early on against a Moneygall side that started the game in a lively fashion but fell away in a whimper, which will disappoint their management team and supporters. Backed by strong breeze in the first half, they looked set to build a decent half time advantage when they led by six points at the end of the first quarter. Michael Ryan and Ger Ryan were hurling well in defence while Phil and Paddy Fanning were effective in the central forward positions. John Doughan played most of the game at midfield to little effect and his presence in the forward line was certainly missed. But they struck just one further point before half time as the Kildangan defence took a vice-like grip on the game, led in the main by the superb Dan Hackett at centre back. A five point half time lead never looked like it was going to be enough and when Eoin Gleeson goaled twelve minutes into the second half, Kildangan powered onto a deserved victory. Playing with great intensity, Moneygall took the game to Kildangan who had won the last three meetings between the sides and forced early frees which were converted by John Doughan and Michael Ryan. Darragh Egan hit a fine free into the breeze to reduce the gap before Moneygall struck for a fine goal in the sixth minute with Phil Fanning doing superbly well to get past the challenge of Liam Kelly before firing to the net from an acute angle and with Doughan adding a fine point from play, Moneygall were in the ascendancy. Darragh Egan and Willie Greene traded points from play before Egan?s strength saw him convert a 75-yard free into the breeze. They were scores that were precious into the elements when Moneygall were dominating and they built the lead to six points through Pajo Troy and a Michael Ryan 65 after Dermot Hogan pulled off a superb save to deny Diarmaid Kennedy. Darragh Egan was winning his battle with Pajo Troy on the wing as Kildangan gradually asserted their control on the game and added points from Egan and Joe Gallagher to a John Doughan effort to leave them five points behind at half time. Within ninety seconds of the restart, two further points were taken off the deficit through Karl Hogan and a long range effort from Gerry Slattery. Kildangan?s excellence from long range was a feature of their scoring with Brian Kelly also getting in on the act. Moneygall were not for giving in just yet and re-established a four-point lead by the 40th minute with points from John Doughan (2 frees) and Paddy Fanning. Darragh Egan was at the heart of the move that proved to be the turning point of the game as he caught a puckout and took on the Moneygall defence before laying off a pass to Eoin Gleeson who gave John King no chance. Gerry Slattery brought Kildangan soon after, and eight minutes later, Kildangan were five points to the good with two coming from the excellent Joe Gallagher while Darragh Egan (free), Eoin Gleeson and Ruairi Gleeson added points. They killed off the game with seven minutes remaining as substitute Sean Gleeson robbed Sean Kennedy and beat John King at his near post. Moneygall tried gamely to claw themselves back into the game with Phil Fanning narrowly shooting wide and only added points from a John Doughan free and Tommy Devereux while the winners added a final point from Darragh Egan after John King made a fine save to deny Rory Whelan a goal in the lead-up. |

Junior Hurling League: Moneygall will commence the Junior Hurling League on Wednesday next at 6.30pm in Moneygall. Borrisoleigh will be the opponents County Senior Hurling League Roundup Holycross-Ballycahill 0-15 Moneygall 0-14 Holycross-Ballycahill made it two wins out of two at Moneygall on Sunday thanks to a narrow one point victory over the home club. Cappawhite 1-11 Moneygall 0-6 The Cappawhite Senior Hurlers earned their first win of the season after a 1-11 to 0-06 victory over Moneygall played out on an extremely wet Moneygall pitch on Sunday afternoon last. Moneygall moved well in the first half but a goal by Cappawhite's Gerry O'Neill against the run of play helped the West club to a 1-5 to 0-6 interval lead. On the turnover, Cappawhite extended their lead as they took control. Moneygall had chances in the second half but found themselves looking for goals instead of taking their points and at the final whistle, Cappawhite were worthy winners. Over the duration of the sixty minutes, Shane McDermott at full back, Tom Treacy at midfield and Pat O'Neill at centre forward, who contributed three points from play were Cappawhite's best performers in the adverse conditions. The winner of the last game in this group between Cappawhite and Ballybacon-Grange will see them through to the Division 2 Quarter-Finals as Group 3 runners-up. A draw in this match will see Cappawhite advance. |

Senior Hurling: The Senior Hurling team made a winning start to the County League when they defeated Ballybacon-Grange by 3-18 to 2-8 in Moneygall on Sunday. Slattery the hero as Kildangan snatch win in injury time Kildangan 1-14 Moneygall 1-12 Former Kildangan captain, Ger Slattery was the toast of Kildangan when his goal, five minutes into injury time snatched victory for his side and broke the hearts of Moneygall in a tense finish to this Hibernian Inn North Tipperary Senior Hurling quarter-final.The left wing back, who led Kildangan to Munster and All-Ireland glory, found himself in the most unusual of positions o Former Kildangan captain, Ger Slattery was the toast of Kildangan when his goal, five minutes into injury time snatched victory for his side and broke the hearts of Moneygall in a tense finish to this Hibernian Inn North Tipperary Senior Hurling quarter-final. The left wing back, who led Kildangan to Munster and All-Ireland glory, found himself in the most unusual of positions on the edge of the Moneygall square to first time to the net after he met a lobbing ball from by Pat Lynch. The goal came in the fifth minute of added time after Moneygall looked well on the road to victory, leading by 1-12 to 0-14 at the time. In the lead up to the goal, Moneygall won a free, forty five metres out, near the stand side of the field. It looked easy pickings for a player with the experience of John Doughan. However, Doughan failed to get the necessary height and Cian Hayes saved before initiating a five man move with Michael Ryan, Karl Hogan and Lynch until Slattery got the vital touch for the winner, as his supporters looked on in disbelief. Those same supporters would be the first to admit that their team stole victory this time and the result must have been heart-breaking for Moneygall who were the better side on the day and were stunned at the end of the game. After a good opening, Kildangan lead by 0-9 to 0-6 at half time but the second half they played second fiddle to Moneygall. The Kildangan defence needed leaders and wing back, Karl Hogan, stood out with a very good display right through the hour. Dan Hackett led by example also and received good assistance from Brian Lawlor and Liam Kelly. John Maher had his moments at midfield but the attack lacked the vital thrust to kill off the game. In fairness, Darragh Egan, Eoin Gleeson and Hughie Flannery picked off the vital scores when needed. Moneygall will rue the ten wides, they incurred throughout the hour. In addition, this was their third defeat at the hands of Kildangan in the past twelve months. Little can be said against their defence where Sean Kennedy had a great first half. Michael Ryan and Pajo Troy were very good also as were Eoin Troy, Willie Greene, Ger Kirwin, John Doughan and Mark Keeshan in attack. Kildangan surged into an early four point lead with points from Patrick Lynch (free), John Maher, Eoin Gleeson and Tommy Connors. Moneygall's John Doughan opened his side's account in the 14th minute. However, Moneygall looked uneasy in front of goal and the wides began to mount up and by half time they had totalled nine as opposed to two from their opponents. Meanwhile, a John Doughan free made it double scores after 19 minutes but Kildangan hit three scores in a row through Darragh Egan, Pat Lynch and Hugh Flannery put Kildangan five ahead with four minutes to go to half time. Then, Moneygall clawed their way back and hit the target three times thanks to points from Sean Ryan, Willie Greene and a John Doughan free. The second half proved a far more entertaining affair and within twenty five seconds of the restart, Diarmuid Kennedy had scored for Moneygall. Thirty seconds later, Brian Kelly had replied before Willie Greene came up field to score. A minor get to know you better, after the re-start had threatened to ruin the match but referee Joe Cahill calmed affairs and issued five yellow cards in addition to the three he gave out in the first half. Scores were hard to come by as both defences were on top and we had to wait until the 40th minute when John Doughan brought Moneygall level with a free. Hugh Flannery gave Kildangan the lead, one minute later, before Doughan made it level again on 0-9 each after 45 minutes. The game needed a goal and it came in the 51st minute after Pajo Troy's free out of defence was gathered by Ger Kirwan who in turn found the unmarked Mark Keeshan on the edge of the square to see Moneygall ahead for the first time at 1-10 to 0-11. Points from Hugh Flannery and Darragh Egan brought Kildangan back on terms in the closing stages but with normal time elapsed a Ger Kirwan point seemed enough to ensure a semi-final berth for Paddy Moore's charges. In what proved a grandstand finish, substitute Joe Gallagher narrowed the deficit for Kildangan with a long-range effort before Moneygall were awarded a free to make sure of victory. John Doughan's effort fell short of the target and Kildangan surged up-field to grab the all important winner through Ger Slattery. Man of the Match: Karl Hogan (Kildangan) The right wing back made a litany of clearances all through the match but in particular in the second half when he kept Kildangan in the race as Moneygall looked the stronger. Scorers; Kildangan: Hugh Flannery, Darragh Egan 0-3 each; Ger Slattery 1-0; Paddy Lynch 0-3, 2 frees; Brian Kelly, Eoin Gleeson, Joe Gallagher, John Maher, Tommy Connors 0-1 each. Moneygall: Sean Doughan 0-6, 4 frees; Mark Keeshan 1-0; Willie Greene 0-2; Sean Ryan, Ger Kirwan, Tommy Deveraux, Diarmuid Kennedy 0-1 each. Kildangan: Cian Hayes; Michael Ryan, Liam Kelly, Brian Lawlor; Karl Hogan, Dan Hackett (Capt), Ger Slattery; John Maher, Darragh Egan; Tommy Connors, Brian Kelly, Pat Lynch; Eoin Gleeson, Hugh Flannery, Conor Hayes. Subs: Joe Gallagher for T Connors (49); Sean Gleeson for B Kelly (53); Liam Karl Flannery for C Hayes (58). Moneygall: Paddy Whyte, Sean Ryan, Sean Kennedy, Donie Guilfoyle; Michael Ryan, Pajo Troy, Stephen Maher; Willie Greene, Eoin Troy; Padraic Greene, Ger Kirwan, John Doughan; Eoghan Ryan, Mark Keeshan, Diarmuid Kennedy. Two first half goals against the wind proved decisive as Moneygall edged out Ballingarry at Moneygall on Sunday in a fine sporting game of hurling. Moneygalls goals came from Tommy Devereux as they trailed Ballingarry by 2-7 to 2-6 at the interval. Ballingarrys first half goals came from Trevor Ivors and J. Houlihan. Moneygall took the lead early in the second half and went up by four points. However, a Liam Croke goal brought Ballingarry back in touch again. Moneygall again stretched their lead to four points as the game entered the final stages only for Trevor Ivors to score his second goal for Ballingarry to ensure a tight finish. Moneygall scored two points to stretch their lead again but in injury time, referee Johnny McDonnell awarded Ballingarry a 21 yard free. Their attempt for goal was saved on the Moneygall line and the final whistle went soon afterwards to ensure a victory for Moneygall. The best players for Moneygall were Michael Ryan, Willie Greene and Ger Kirwan. Best for Ballingarry were Gary Ivors and Nigel Cleere in defence, Donal Shelly at midfield and L.Croke, Trevor Ivors and Don Lyons up front. Moneygall: Paddy Whyte; Michael Bergin, Sean Kennedy, Donie Guilfoyle; Michael Ryan (0-1), Diarmaid Kennedy, Pajo Troy (0-1); Willie Greene (0-6, 0-1 free), Eoin Troy (0-2); Ger Kirwan (0-1), Noel Ryan, Stephen Maher (0-2); Conor Ryan, John Doughan (0-6, 0-5 frees), Tommy Devereux (2-0)

Junior Hurling League: The Junior hurling league commences this weekend with Moneygall playing Lorrha, in Lorrha, on Sunday morning at 11am. County Senior Hurling League Clonoulty-Rossmore 0-12 Moneygall 0-11 Clonoulty-Rossmore recorded their first win in the league with a hard fought 1 point victory over Moneygall on Sunday last. Playing with a very strong wind in the first half, Clonoulty opened their account in the third minute with a point from Timmy Hammersley. However, the West side found it difficult to score from play with wind advantage and were too reliant on the accuracy of Paudie White from frees. Moneygall adopted better to the conditions and helped by good points from play by Willie Greene and Eoghan Ryan as well as two frees from John Doughan, they led by 0-9 to 0-6 at the interval. Clonoulty introduced Liam Devane in the half-back line in the second half and with improved performances from John Devane and James Heffernan, they reduced the deficit to just two points with twelve minutes of normal time remaining. Paudie White scored two frees to equalise and a long range effort from John Devane put Clonoulty in front. Moneygall pressed hard for the equaliser during 10 minutes of second half injury time but the Clonoulty defence held out for a one point victory. Best for Clonoulty was Paudie White, John Devane, James Heffernan, Timmy Hammersley and Liam Devane. Moneygall were best served by Michael Ryan, Ger Kirwan, Eoghan Ryan, Sean Kennedy and Pajo Troy. Maher inspires Duagh to Croker spotlight By Bob Lester, Irish Examiner Duagh 0-12 Park/Ratheniska 0-9 CROKER here we come. They may be just a dot on the North Kerry map, but the quality of Duaghs football in Moneygall on Saturday for a junior club was all encompassing. They showed both skill and character in abundance as they outplayed plucky Park/Ratheniska from Laois in booking a showpiece final date under lights at headquarters against Tyrones Greencastle. Fair play to Park/Ratheniska though, they made it real tough for Duagh in this free-flowing All-Ireland Club JFC semi-final. But, when the Kerry and Munster champions were asked to stand tall, they had steel in the shape of outstanding midfielder Anthony Maher; enough firepower to ignite eight different players hit the target and, when they were asked to defend, the likes of Kieran Quirke, Aenghus Carmody and Diarmuid Nolan were not found wanting. No wonder team boss John Dillon was pleased. What a day for us, its just unbelievable a small club like ours will now see Croke Park from the inside and outside just like so many great Kingdom teams of the past. This win is massive for our club. At half-time, though we were only on level terms, despite dominating possession. I told the lads that this was about getting over the line. Do you want to play in Croke Park and be winners? You bet. They dug deep to a man, Im proud of every one of them. Hopefully, we can finish the job now. No question, Duagh served notice early and, with Declan Griffin and Maher making an immediate impact at midfield, they came hard at Park and were rewarded with points from Denis Lane and Aidan Kelly. Colm Brennan did nip in for a Park point, but it was all Duagh. Points from Brendan OBrien and a Tom Dillon free pushed them three points clear inside the opening nine minutes and the Laois men were struggling. But, with the half backline now beginning to settle, Park showed why they are Leinster champions as points from the ever menacing Kieran Delaney and wily Tom Bowe left just the minimum between the sides after the opening quarter, 0-4 to 0-3. Delaney was proving a real thorn in the Duagh defence and his free levelled matters in the 17th minute. Duagh were wasteful, their use of the long ball far from effective. Alan OBrien did put them clear again, but stubborn Park/Ratheniska failed to buckle. With wing forward Brendan Fingleton showing some nice touches, Bowe again levelled the scores two minute later and thats how it stayed until the break, 0-5 apiece. Duagh had failed to convert three 45s in a row and Cathal g Greene and goalkeeper Brian Ramsbottom, in turn, had to make fine saves to deny Aidan Kelly a goal Duagh so badly wanted. Dillons half-time words must have been inspirational for, no question, Duagh won this excellent game with a focused restart. Maher was magic, his textbook block and fantastic point put them on their way. And when Scanlon, Kelly and Griffin followed with points, it looked game over. But again this Laois outfit proved they were no pushover. Delaney pointed to leave it 0-9 to 0-6 to Duagh entering the final quarter and the game was back in the melting pot when Bowe pointed, after a terrific Park/Ratheniska move. Duagh keeper John Halpin then had to make a terrific save to deny Bowe a goal that menacing Park/Ratheniska so badly needed. And it proved their parting shot. Stand up Brendan OBrien for two of the most outstanding and vital points one could witness and Duagh were on their way to a dream Croker final date. Duaghs more direct style of play in the second-half had worked the oracle and no wonder long serving secretary Liam Dennehy, in his final year before he takes over the North Kerry chair, was delighted. Weve travelled over half-way to Dublin for this result. Rest assured, when we go the full journey Duagh will be as focused as any Kerry team at Croke Park. Croker here we come. Scorers for Duagh: B. OBrien 0-3, A. Kelly, T. Dillon (frees) 0-2 each, D. Lane, A. OBrien, A. Maher, T. Scanlon, D. Griffin (free) 0-1 each. Park/Ratheniska: T. Bowe (0-1 free) and K. Delaney (0-2 frees) 0-4 each, C. Seamus O Riain (1916-2007)
Seamus served as President of the Gaelic Athletic Association from 1967 to 1970 and was President of the Tipperary County Board since 1990. Seamus was born in 1916 in Busherstown, near Moneygall in Co. Tipperary. He was educated at Moneygall N.S., Colaiste Einde and Colaiste Chaoimhinm Dublin and De La Salle College Waterford where he trained as a National Teacher. He taught in Cloughjordan, Newcastlewest, Inis Barr a Chuin (an island off the West Coast) and Borrisokane before finally taking up his post at Dunkerrin N.S. It is interesting to note that while in Borrisokane, Seamus Gardiner (GAA President from 1943 to 1946) was his principal. Seamus won two Waterford Senior Football Championships with De La Salle and also won the Gold Medal for best all rounder during both his years in College. He played Junior hurling and football with Tipperary and also won many Tipperary and Munster athletic championships. He served his local Moneygall club as Secretary during the early forties. Seamus was elected Vice Chairman of the North Tipperary Board in 1955 and Chairman in 1957, a position he held until 1966. He was first elected to the Munster Council in 1958 and became Vice-Chairman in 1962. He was elected chairman of the Munster Council in 1965 and was elected President of the GAA in 1967. His term of Presidency (1967 to 1970) marked some major developments in the GAA. The most notable of these were the inauguration of Scor, the first games with Australian Rules in Ireland and Australia, the setting up of the Commission on the Affairs of the GAA, the launching of the Club Development Scheme, and the decision to build a modern handball court in Croke Park. On completion of his term as President in 1970 he succeeded Canon Fogarty as Chairman of the Tipperary County Board. He was influential in having the Canon Fogarty trophy competition initiated - this competition brought together the secondary and vocational schools of Tipperary. Another innovation was the first Tipperary GAA yearbook. His crowning glory however must surely have been Feile na nGael, which arrived on the scene in 1971 and which has since become probably the most significant youth development in the GAA. Having completed his three years as County Board Chairman, he concentrated his attentions on the Moneygall club, taking over as Chairman in 1974. A year later Moneygall won their first ever North Tipperary Senior Hurling title as a distinct unit. They added the County title for good measure and the team included four members of the Ryan Clan, Philip, Seamus Junior, Jack and Eugene. In 1975, the County title was retained. This history of the Moneygall club entitled the Moneygall Hurling Story, 1885 to 1975 was penned by Seamus at the end of 1975. Courtesy of Tipperary PRO Ed Donnelly |
